A Newry community group has been bringing local people together and shaking off the winter blues after landing a funding boost from the Housing Executive.

St Mary's Youth and Community Association received a £1,110 Community Cohesion grant which helped them plan a 9 mile walk along the Carlingford Lough Greenway from Carlingford towards Newry, taking in the stunning scenery of Carlingford Lough and the surrounding mountains along the way.

Gerard Smith, Good Relations Officer at the Housing Executive, said the funding was all about building real bonds between people: "We're pleased to support St Mary's Youth and Community Association to build real community connections, combat isolation and boost physical and mental health. This event was a great opportunity for tenants to strengthen relationships, meet new neighbours and get active in the winter months."

And by all accounts, the day delivered on every front. The fun kicked off on the bus before the group hit the trail, with the walk rounded off by a sit-down lunch and a guided meditation workshop.

Kate Cahill, Chairperson at St Mary's Youth & Community Association, said it was exactly what the community needed: "The day was a great opportunity for local people of all ages to come together, connect with each other, and combat the winter blues. The craic started on the bus, with plenty of talking along the walk and fantastic views of Carlingford Lough and the mountains in the background. We finished with lunch and relaxed with a meditation session, the perfect end to the day. Thanks to the Housing Executive for facilitating this event and we're looking forward to getting out more together."

With the group already looking ahead to future outings, it looks like this is just the first step in what promises to be a busy year for St Mary's in Newry.
