Figures were published following a Freedom of Information request reply by the Council. The reply also shows that the Council issued 46 Fixed Penalty Notices for littering during 2018.
Littering and Dog fouling are prevalant throughout Newry city with pavements, parks, Newry Canal, the Clanrye River and walkways blighted by dog excrement and litter.
The council's Neighbourhood Services department is responsible for enforcing both litter and dog fouling. A fixed penalty notice is for £80 although if this is paid within ten days it's reduced to £50.
Out of the 46 littering fines 40 were paid by 11 March 2019 with one person prosecuted for failing to pay.
13 of the fines were for cigarette butt deposits, 1 for plastic wrapper deposit and 1 for white cardboard/ paper deposit.
Out of the 10 fines for dog fouling 7 were paid by 11 March 2019 with one person prosecuted for failure to pay.
Newry, Mourne and Down Council have 13 parks in their care. It's not known whether these fines were issued in local parks or walkway or in a street etc. It's also not known from the information what part of the district the fines were issued.
