Resurfacing works have begun on Erskine Street in Newry, with Councillor Geraldine Kearns welcoming the start of the scheme that forms the final phase of a wider programme of road improvements across the city.
Works commenced on 23 February, with the resurfacing of Erskine Street representing the last stage of a programme that has already seen improvements carried out on Sugar Island, Canal Street, New Street and Merchants Quay in Newry City. The works are hoped to be substantially complete by 1 March.
Councillor Kearns said she was pleased to see the project finally getting started, describing the road surface as having been "in a dire condition," and welcoming the fact that action was now being taken to address it.
Cllr Kearns also pointed to the role of Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins in securing the funding that made the scheme possible, saying the Minister "has been working hard to address the rapid deterioration of our road network through the additional funding she has recently secured for roads maintenance."
