MLA Liz Kimmins has welcomed the launch of the procurement process for Newry City Park, describing it as an important milestone for the delivery of the major project.

The process to appoint a contractor is now live, with construction expected to begin later this year. Over £18.6 million has been committed to phase one of the project, comprising £16.2 million secured by the former Finance Minister Conor Murphy and £2.4 million from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

The Newry and Armagh MLA said the park had been shaped by local consultation and would deliver an inclusive 15-acre green space for the city and wider district.

"The process to appoint a contractor to build Newry City Park has now gone live and this marks an important milestone for the delivery of this major project for Newry," said Ms Kimmins.

Phase one is set to include an inclusive play park, sensory garden, water and urban sports areas, outdoor event space and plaza for markets, alongside improved Greenway links and walking and cycling paths.

"Newry City Park will attract tourism, create exciting opportunities for local people, boost the economy and support the health and wellbeing of our people," Ms Kimmins added; "Sinn Féin will continue to work with the council to ensure delivery at pace, with construction expected to begin later this year."
