Over 130 older people from the Silverbridge area and beyond gathered for Bolster Community's recent Discover & Connect event, which brought together more than 15 organisations and services in a welcoming afternoon of socialising, music and information sharing.
The event, supported by Bank of Ireland through the Begin Together Community Fund and Community Foundation for Northern Ireland, was designed to help older people connect with local supports, meet others, and enjoy a sociable afternoon in their community.
Live music from Billy Finnegan had many attendees up on their feet dancing, while others relaxed and chatted over tea, coffee and freshly made sandwiches. Friendships were rekindled and new connections made throughout the day.
Newry and Armagh MLA Aoife Finnegan addressed those in attendance, speaking about the challenges facing older people across Northern Ireland. "Because while we know there are many strengths in our communities, we also know that too many older people across Northern Ireland experience loneliness, isolation, and at times feel excluded or unheard," she said.
Ms Finnegan also spoke about the particular barriers that can exist in rural communities around transport, access to services and opportunities for connection, and welcomed the work of Bolster Community in addressing these issues through practical services and social initiatives.
She also highlighted the importance of the Not Done Yet survey, encouraging older people to share their views on what would help them live well now and into the future.
Students from St Joseph's High School, Crossmaglen were also on hand throughout the day, with Bolster Community extending thanks to the young people for their enthusiasm and practical help, as well as to all staff, volunteers and partner organisations involved.
Bolster Community is a values-led charity based in Newry and Kilkeel, working alongside individuals, families and communities to promote resilience, inclusion and wellbeing.
