The Salvation Army, in partnership with the Policing and Community Safety Partnership and PSNI are delighted to announce the roll out of the Newry Knights project from this week.

As part of the PCSP strategy to address issues in the Night time Economy the Newry Knights volunteer project provides a safe place and support for vulnerable people in need of assistance, where they can go or be signposted to, by police, or other night-time economy providers.

Having recently completed an intensive 6 week training programme, the volunteers will operate on the streets and from their base in McGrath House between the hours of 11pm and 4am.

Major John Parrott, from the Salvation Army commented “Newry Knights aim to be approachable to people finding themselves vulnerable, as well as to members of the local communities and commerce. As a frontline presence we will also aim to provide some reassurance to parents, that if we have contact with their young people, they will come home safe.  We also anticipate building good relations with local licensed premises especially the door staff, and managers.”

Supporting the move Cllr Andy Moffett, PCSP Chair stated, “Looking after the community safety needs of the District is a key action point for the Policing and Community Safety Partnership, and the establishment of this service is a key marker to continue to provide a high standard of safety in the night time experience of our residents and visitors alike in keeping with Newry City Centre Purple Flag status.

Sergeant Tom Young, PSNI Newry Neighbourhood team added, “From a policing perspective this new initiative is very welcome, unfortunately the Christmas period can bring with it excessive alcohol consumption and violent crime which can leave a number of people, young and old susceptible to harm on a night out, the Newry Knights will provide a valuable support service to those who need it.”
