The NI Science Festival returns this year running from Thursday 17 – Sunday 27 February. Several events are being held locally which will highlight the heritage and the landscape of our area.
The STEM celebration, which has grown to become the largest of its kind on the island of Ireland, boasts more than 120 events taking place over 11 days. Enjoy a peaceful walk at A Look At The Stars, A Step Back In Time (17 February), hearing the fascinating stories of times gone by whilst looking at the wonders of the night sky at Ott Car Park in the Mournes.
Learn how to make country fresh butter at Booley & Butter - Forgotten Traditions of the Past (26 February) to accompany a delicious lunch of freshly baked breads, preserves and jams, whilst sitting taking in the breath-taking views to the North of Slieve Gullion’s summit dome.
Professional glass artist Tracey McVerry hosts Glass from the Past (25 February) at her glass studio in Newtownhamilton to explore the extraordinary medium of fused glass whilst creating your own glass OGHAM artwork.
Discover the wonders of the Mournes at a range of events during the festival. At the Diamond Rock Walking Tour (27 February) guide Peter Rafferty explains how to identify diverse rock types and how the Mournes were formed; learn about the amazing geology and history of the area at Geology on the Rocks (19 February); join the Men of Mourne – Stone & Steel (20 February) hiking tour and hear stories of hardship and endurance as you take to the rocky mountain tracks; and in Mourne Stone Walling – A Granite Kingdom, experience the beauty and hard graft behind the 5,000-year-old craft of dry-stone wall building.
Commenting on the launch of the 2022 NI Science Festival, its director, Chris McCreery, says: “Our festival exists to engage audiences, stimulate discussion, and ignite interest in the wonders of science, technology, engineering and mathematics – and we’re confident this year’s diverse programming will expand the horizons of festival goers of all ages and abilities across Northern Ireland.”
