Write a commentOver 1000 trees, shrubs and plants have been planted by local schoolchildren at Warrenpoint Port In a move to enhance the local environment.
Seven local schools toook part in the planting by the Port at The Gut area along the harbour’s boundary.
Schools included Dromore Road Primary and St Dallan’s in Warrenpoint, Kilbroney Integrated Primary and St Bronagh’s Primary in Rostrevor, St Colman’s in Kilkeel, St Patrick’s Primary in Mayobridge and Carrick Primary in Burren.
It follows a £55,000 investment by Warrenpoint Port and the planting included Rowan and Crab Apple trees as well as lavender and other flowers.
Commenting on the event Clare Guinness, CEO of Warrenpoint Port, said “It was wonderful to be able to come together with schools in our community and partner with their Eco Councils, working alongside them to make a positive contribution to the environment.
“In addition to the trees, lavender and other flowers were planted, bringing a vibrant splash of colour to the area and meaning each child was able to plant something for themselves.
“At Warrenpoint Port we are passionate about improving our local area and are extremely grateful to the schools that helped us complete this phase of tree planting
“We are committed to helping provide a greener future for the children and maintaining the wider Port setting for generations to come, as part of our responsibility to act as a custodian of the local marine environment.”
All the plants were locally sourced in Warrenpoint and are native to the area.
