Write a commentHaving never run a marathon before local men Neil Rooney and his cousin John James Fallon are gearing up to run the Dublin Marathon on 29th October this year to raise much needed funds for local charities Southern Area Hospice Services and PIPS Newry & Mourne.
Speaking about the challenge Neil commented "Despite our 'athletic physiques and striking good looks' (his words not mine) we are a long way from being fit enough for a marathon, so we have a huge task ahead of us!
"We are both heavily involved with various charities and have completed a number of fundraising events in the past! Our official marathon training kicks off next week but we have been putting plenty of miles in already to get a head start!"
Their chosen charities Southern Area Hospice Services provides invaluable support and care to people who are suffering from Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone Disease and AIDS and PIPS Newry and Mourne offers the community a targeted response to suicide and self harm and is the leading suicide prevention charity in the area.
The pair realise that both charities carry out vital work in our community but none of this work could be done without local support and cold hard cash!

John James and Neil will be running various smaller events on the run up to the marathon to help raise funds towards our £2000 target so keep an eye out!
They are running a Charity Quiz on the 10th August at 9.00PM in the Canal Court Hotel in Newry with an entry of £3 per person and there will be a raffle and auction on the night!
