A Newry City councillor has strongly condemned an attack on a Translink Busy Bus after a side window was smashed by a missile while the vehicle was travelling along the Camlough Road over the weekend.
Councillor Aidan Mathers said the incident left broken glass strewn across the bus and warned that serious injury was only a matter of time if such behaviour continued. "I am deeply saddened by this latest attack on a vital service that the people of Newry need and deserve. A side window was smashed, leaving broken glass strewn across the bus. Thankfully, there have been no reports of injuries, but it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt as a result of this reckless and mindless behaviour."
Cllr Mathers said he had spoken with Translink management and expressed frustration at the knock-on effect for local services. "I spoke with management this morning and was frustrated to learn that the local town centre service will be significantly affected while this vehicle is taken off the road for repairs. This bus provides an important service to many people in our community and its loss will be felt by those who rely on it."
Cllr Mathers appealed for anyone with information to come forward. "I totally condemn this anti-community activity. Those responsible have shown complete disregard for public safety and for the people who depend on this service every day. I would appeal to anyone with information about this incident to report it to the relevant authorities so that those responsible can be identified, apprehended and held accountable for their actions."
