SDLP Newry Councillor Kevin McAteer has said that it is important that the public respond to a DUP Conscience Bill during the period of consultation before it is brought to the floor of the Assembly.
He said "I have spoken to a number of people concerned about the contents of a DUP Private Members’ Bill due to be brought to the Assembly in the new year. The Bill would amend equality regulations relating to the prevention of discrimination against people based on their sexual orientation.
“This is clearly a huge issue for the LGBT community and those who fought hard to ensure we have robust equality legislation that protects minorities. It’s hugely important, therefore, that everyone interested in this takes the opportunity to respond to the public consultation to have their voice heard.
“The SDLP is a party founded on the principles of human rights, equality and reconciling our divided society. Those principles will guide our response to this proposed legislation. It remains vital, however, that the proposers of the legislation hear from the public and are exposed to the immense depth of feeling on these issues.”
