Alpha Housing has reopened McManus Court in Newry after a £1.07 million refurbishment programme. The eight month project has transformed the sheltered housing scheme for its 35 tenants, delivering brighter communal spaces and fire safety upgrades.

The reopening was marked by a special celebration attended by tenants, invited guests and community representatives.

McManus Court provides sheltered housing for older people, combining the security and privacy of an individual home with opportunities for social connection and community life. The refurbishment has given the scheme a fresh new look while preserving the strong sense of community that makes McManus Court special, and tenants are already enjoying the benefits, with many commenting on how much brighter, more modern and welcoming the scheme now feels.

Margaret McVeigh, a tenant at McManus Court, said, "I've lived here for five years now. The recent refurbishment is fantastic. McManus is a safe and secure place to live in beautiful surroundings."

Justin McNulty MLA said McManus Court had been part of the Newry community for many years and that it was fantastic to see investment in a scheme that means so much to the people who live there. He said, "The improvements will help ensure tenants continue to enjoy safe, modern homes and welcoming communal spaces where friendships can flourish and people can remain connected to their community. It is a wonderful example of investment that will make a lasting difference to current and future residents."

Martin Quinn, Head of Homes and Communities at Alpha Housing, said McManus Court played an important role in helping older people live independently while remaining connected to their community. He said, "This significant investment demonstrates Alpha Housing's commitment to providing safe, modern and comfortable homes for our tenants. The refurbishment has enhanced both the building and the experience of those who call McManus Court home. We are delighted to celebrate the completion of the works and to see tenants enjoying the benefits of the improvements."

The £1.07 million investment has delivered modernised facilities throughout the scheme, ensuring it continues to meet the needs of older people in Newry for years to come. It also means residents can continue to live independently while remaining connected to friends, neighbours and the wider community.
