Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service is recruiting Year 1 Cadets for young people aged 14 for their weekly Newry branch. The programme gives teenagers aged 14 to 17 the chance to develop practical skills while learning more about the work of NIFRS.
Cadet branches operate in Newry, Bangor, Belfast and Lisburn, meeting weekly during school term time under the guidance of dedicated volunteer Cadet Leaders. Cadets take part in a wide range of activities including basic firefighting skills, road traffic collision scenarios, first aid and community fundraising events.
Through activities designed to build teamwork, communication, leadership and confidence, Cadets gain real-world experience, make new friendships and have fun in a supportive environment. The scheme operates in line with the values of Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service, encouraging dignity and respect while helping to develop teamwork and leadership skills.
NIFRS Group Commander David Shortt said cadets was a great way for young people to build their confidence, work on their communication and teamwork skills and meet other like-minded young people. He said, "It gives them the opportunity to challenge themselves, learn practical life skills and gain valuable experiences in a safe, supportive and inclusive environment."
Commander Shortt added, "Whether they are interested in NIFRS or simply looking for a new hobby, the programme helps young people grow their confidence, develop lasting friendships and become active, positive members of their community. We would encourage any young person who may be interested to find out more and get involved."
