Newry & Armagh MLA Justin McNulty has presented a framed portrait of Seamus Mallon to Andy Pollack who hosted a recent event 'The Seamus Mallon I Knew' at Newry Museum.
Mr McNulty offered his thanks to Newry Museum curator Noreen Cunningham and assistant curator Ken Abraham for their facilitation of the event recently hosted at Bagenal’s Castle, which commemorated the contribution of Séamus Mallon and the critical role he played in the negotiation of the Good Friday Agreement.
Veteran journalist Andy Pollack co-authored Mallon’s memoir: A Shared Homeplace.
Commenting after the event Mr McNulty said: “this event served as a timely reminder of the Trojan contribution Séamus Mallon made to bringing an end to violence and building a society based on peace, reconciliation and self-determination.
“As the first nationalist MP for Newry & Armagh, Séamus was a ferocious advocate for peace. He was the standard-bearer for constitutional nationalism and nonviolent republicanism in our community. Séamus demonstrated, through word and deed that a New Ireland can only be built by building trust and respect between neighbours. He was a man of unimpeachable integrity and we are all better off for the contribution he made.”
