The SDLP’s Justin McNulty has welcomed the support of An Taoiseach Micheál Martin for the expansion of Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry.

The Newry & Armagh Assembly Election candidate was speaking after Micheál Martin identified Daisy Hill as a potential site for a cross-border health hub at a meeting of the Good Friday Agreement Oireachtas Committee.
Mr. McNulty continued, “after the Southern Trust announced the withdrawal of emergency general surgery from Daisy Hill in January, I launched a campaign to fight back and demand that Daisy Hill be expanded for future generations.
“I have brought my campaign to both Belfast and Dublin and I have been very encouraged by the depth and breadth of support in the Republic for common sense solutions to the pressures on Daisy Hill.
“To have the support of the Taoiseach is a major step forward in this campaign and it is absolutely vital that we keep the pressure on the Southern Trust and the Department of Health in Belfast.
“The people of our area have a chance to use their vote to raise their voice on the future of our hospital. I’m asking voters to dig in their heels and stand their ground on Daisy Hill.
“For too long, Newry, South Armagh, and south Down have been areas which are constantly the last to get and the first to lose. Let’s send a clear message on Thursday that we will not tolerate the continued erosion of Newry City’s Hospital.”
