Write a commentRecent comments on Brexit by local business and farming organisations have been welcomed by Newry and Armagh MLA Justin McNulty. The comments followed the publication of the EU/ UK Government Brexit Withdrawal Agreement.
Mr McNulty commented "This week the SDLP held a very productive event in Belfast. We heard from Armagh born Labour MP Conor McGinn as well as Markethill Senator Ian Marshall along with others. They and the many from our trade unions, business, farming and voluntary groups have stepped up and called for the passing of the deal at Westminster. Meanwhile, we have ten DUP MP’s in Westminster going against the will of the people here, whilst others don’t even bother turning up to represent the people of this region."
The Newry and Armagh MLA added ‘Business and farming groups, trade unions and the community and voluntary sector have all came out very strongly this week in favour of the deal on offer between the European Union and the UK Government. These are very welcome interjections and their voices must be heard in the corridors of power in Westminster. The DUP and their cronies on the hard right of the Tory Party are hell bent on driving this economy over the cliff edge. Their ideological thinking is pure and utter madness and they have backed themselves into a very dangerous corner."
Force for Good
Mr McNulty spoke of how the EU has been a force for good "Let’s be clear, I don’t want to see Brexit happen. The European Union has been good for our island and for the continent. It has brought peace, stability and prosperity to our people. It has been encouraged and protected our often fragile peace process and it has been a force for good.
"If the UK are hell bent on leaving the European Union, then the offer on the table is a common sense approach. It recognises the unique circumstances we are in the North, in Europe, on this island and in the UK. It gives businesses, employers, employees and citizens certainty and it is by far a better option than a crash and burn Brexit."
