Note This is an April Fool Story
German Chancellor Angela Merkel is to visit Newry later this week along with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar in what’s seen as a key part of her push to ensure that whatever the outcome of the Brexit negotiations there will be a solution found to prevent a hard border.
It’s part of her trip to Ireland on Thursday and she will meet local business people during her short visit.
Surprisingly it’s not her first visit to the city having visited in 1998 along with her cousin Rolf Lapio, head of the Volkswagen Group at the time. The pair unveiled the new Volkswagen Beetle at P&R Motors on Merchants Quay, 31 June that year.
As well as meeting local civic leaders Ms Merkel, who’s often seen as the de facto leader of the EU will also visit Newry institution Grounded to check out some historic Oktoberfest Newry memorabilia.
