Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has visited Markethill High School to discuss road safety concerns with principal Colin Berry.
Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council Councillor Bróna Haughey and Newry and Armagh MLA Cathal Boylan joined the minister on the visit, which focused on the safety of pupils, parents and staff around the school.
Speaking after the visit, Councillor Haughey said: "I was pleased to welcome the Infrastructure Minister to Markethill High School to discuss ongoing road safety concerns with principal Colin Berry. The focus of the visit was traffic speeds during peak school times and the safety of pupils, parents and staff."
The school, whilst located within the village boundary, sits on a road subject to a 40mph speed limit, which has raised concerns for the school community. Cllr Haughey explained that although there has been a campaign for 20mph signage, extending the existing 30mph limit beyond its current boundary to cover the area outside the school may prove a more practical solution.
She continued: "It was important to examine this issue on the ground and identify realistic options to reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety."
Minister Kimmins is already reviewing speed limits outside schools as part of an ongoing public consultation, which includes consideration of 20mph limits where appropriate. She is also considering pedestrian crossings at the school to ensure the safe passage of children and to promote active travel.
