In the wake of severe icy conditions this morning, 8 January, that rendered numerous roads impassable across Newry and Armagh, MLA Justin McNulty is urgently calling for an emergency response from the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) to address safety concerns.
Expressing his concern Mr. McNulty said “My SDLP colleagues and I have received a surge of pleas for assistance from residents throughout the area, especially those on rural roads.”
The recent freezing conditions have exacerbated the hazardous state of the roads, compounded by challenges in adequately gritting arterial routes. People have found themselves stranded at home today unable to navigate the treacherous roadways while many schools in Newry and elsewhere either didn't open or closed before lunchtime.
Mr McNulty said his office are tirelessly working to facilitate the delivery of grit piles to affected areas, replenish grit boxes, and ensure that roads on the gritting schedules receive the necessary attention.
Commenting on the situation, McNulty urged, “Given the anticipated continuation of this inclement weather, I implore everyone to exercise extreme caution in the days ahead. Additionally, I encourage residents to promptly report any road-related issues to my offices so that we can address and rectify them without delay.”
