A young ecologist and conservationist is organising a free winter botany walk along the Carlingford Lough Greenway this Saturday 13 January.
Dean Mac Cú Uladh, a former pupil of St Joseph's Boys High School in Newry will lead the walk from Newry along the Greenway, and he hopes it will be the first of many similar events. Explaining his plan Dean said "We are in the throes of Winter, but there is still life to see along Newry Greenway. Starting at Albert Basin, we will venture along the greenway to see what botanical interest there is, and any other wildlife!
"Despite the cold and short days, some wildflowers will be brave enough to chase the low but slowly growing sun. We will have a look at winter tree ID as well and discuss the different life cycles of plants such as deciduous and evergreen. In doing so, we will hopefully begin to see Spring not too far away!"
Everyone is welcome to join in. The path is largely flat so accessiblility is good. The walk will be a relaxed casual event and length will depend on numbers and ability. Dress appropriately for January weather (coat, gloves, boots etc).
The event takes place this Saturday 13 January from 11am to 1pm and you can register at www.eventbrite.co.uk
Dean has also launched a Facebook group called 'Newry Wildlife and Nature'. He sees the presence as the start of his journey into nature education and scientific communication. He aims to create an active community of naturalists in the Newry area and wants to highlight the importance of habitat diversity, biodiversity and the relationship between the human landscape and the natural world.
