MLA Aoife Finnegan has raised concerns over the lack of progress on works at Newtownhamilton PSNI Station, after she and Councillor Oonagh Magennis met with police to discuss the ongoing delays.

The Newry and Armagh MLA said: "Cllr Magennis and I met with the PSNI to raise our serious concerns about the ongoing situation at Newtownhamilton Barracks and the lack of progress on works at the site. Works were expected to begin approximately six months ago, with part of the road closed to facilitate the project. Since then, however, there has been little to no visible progress. Understandably, this is causing increasing frustration for residents and those who regularly use the area."

Finnegan said clarity had repeatedly been sought about the situation, adding: "We have raised these concerns with the PSNI on a number of occasions and repeatedly sought clarity on the reasons for the delay. Initially, we were advised that, due to security considerations, details could not be provided. However, at a subsequent meeting, we were informed that the project had commenced without the necessary funding having been secured to progress the works. Communication surrounding this project has been extremely poor. This is particularly disappointing given efforts made, over many years, to improve relationships between the PSNI and the local community, including through the constructive work of the local neighbourhood policing team."

Cllr Magennis said residents deserved clear and accurate information about what was happening, why the delays had occurred and when the works would be completed. She said: "We have now raised the matter with our party colleagues and asked that it be pursued directly through the Policing Board with PSNI Estates. We are seeking urgent clarity on the current position, the funding for the project and a firm timetable for completion."

Finnegan concluded: "We will continue to press for answers and ensure the concerns and frustrations of the local community are heard."
