MLA Liz Kimmins has had a meeting with senior council officials to discuss the potential of reopening Newry Canal. The Newry and Armagh MLA said “Newry canal has a long history and fantastic potential as a tourism attraction for the city.
“We had a productive meeting with senior council officials to discuss how we can realise the full potential of Newry and its historic waterways.
“As an MLA I raised the possibility of reopening the Newry canal with both the former Infrastructure Minister and Waterways Ireland, both of whom confirmed that responsibility for the canal lies with the council.
“In addition, Charlie Casey, our former councillor, raised this issue with the council a number of times, pressing them to realise the potential of the canal.
“While the council has carried out some welcome works at loughs [sic] and along the towpath, there is massive untapped potential for the site.
“Sinn Féin will work with our colleagues on ABC council who also have a responsibility for part of the canal, as well as with local groups to see the full potential of Newry Canal realised for the benefit of all in the city.
Newry.ie has asked what was discussed and what action has been taken to work towards fullfilling the Canal's 'massive untapped potential' and we will update when we recieve a reply.
