Last week's sport and reconciliation event in Newry has been praised by MLA Justin McNulty. The event, hosted by the John and Pat Hume Foundation, took place at the Canal Court Hotel on Wednesday last 24 June.
Titled 'The Role of Sport in Reconciliation', the event was attended by GAA President Jarlath Burns and Portaferry middle distance runner and European Athletics Championship gold medallist Ciara Mageean.
Mr McNulty said: "The Hume Foundation event was a brilliant evening discussing the important role that sport offers in helping people across divides find common ground. It was incredible to hear from two hugely impressive figures in Irish sport, European Gold Medalist and Portaferry GAC Camogie Player Ciara Mageean and Uachtarán Cumann Lúthchleas Gael and former Armagh GAA & Silverbridge Harps player Jarlath Burns. It was also great to have recent Everest conqueror Sarah Armstrong joining the large attendance.
"Sport unites us, and hearing from Peace Players and Limestone United, groups with the missions to unite and empower people cross-community through the shared experience of sport and to promote understanding and respect was a very enjoyable and meaningful experience."
