There has been widespread condemnation of an incident at Monkshill Cemetery in Newry, where graves had items removed and thrown about the area, with some grave fixtures appearing to have been broken. The damage was noticed by a visitor to the graveyard yesterday Monday 20 July.
At this time it's not known if the incident was a deliberate act of vandalism or if there is another explanation.
Cllr Valarie Harte said that those involved had caused huge distress to the families, relatives and friends of those plots they had attacked. “The desecration of a grave is very distressing for any family. Those involved in this attack must be unreservedly condemned. Many grieving families find great comfort in visiting cemeteries, they are places of peace and reflection”.
Cllr Charlie Casey commented "Has to be a rational explanation for this mess at Monkshill Cemetery." while Cllr Michael Savage said Cllr Gary Stokes and himself will speak with Council officials to discuss increasing security at the Cemetery with CCTV an option, and said "Our thoughts are with the families traumatised by the actions of the vandals. Have they never lost someone dear to them?"
Cllr Gavin Malone said he was disgusted with the damage and hurt done "Since I was elected to the council, I have never experienced such pain and sadness caused by wilful vandalism by those who live in our community. The individuals who carried out this damage should be totally ashamed of themselves and have no place in our society.
"I call on our Council to consider all options including CCTV to protect the cemetery and apprehend those who participate in this type of vandalism and ensure this type of incident never happens again."
Local undertakers Pouchers Funeral Directors have offered to replace any damaged markers etc free of charge.

Newry, Mourne and Down Council also commented on the incident saying “Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is aware of reports of anti-social behaviour taking place in Monkshill Municipal Cemetery on the evening of 20 July. Council staff were on site last night following reports of these incidents. They also noted the large number of people who had called to the site to check their own family plots and, the Council understands, remove damaged items. The Council appreciates the special importance of such places and the need for their respectful care.
Council staff are on site today to deal with any of the issues which need to be addressed. They will also be in contact with the PSNI to seek their assistance with better managing anti-social behaviour in the area of the cemetery.”
