Gone are the days when a ‘cloth nappy’ meant a white terry towelling nappy being boiled in an aluminium bucket! No wonder many mums switched to the disposable type of nappy! But now, many are switching back thanks to a fantastic new range of materials and fabrics for cloth nappies and an easier way of using them.
In addition to the fact that they’re a healthier, free-from-chemicals alternative to the disposable nappies, cloth nappies are also great for the environment – particularly when you consider that it takes an estimated 250-500 years for one disposable nappy to decompose! And, with savings in excess of £1000 per child, they’re also great for your purse!
With so many styles and types available, however, it’s easy to see how parents can be confused about what’s on offer so, now, one local group has taken cloth nappies ‘on the road’ to showcase the benefits of the nappies and the library service.
Over the next few months The Cloth Nappy Library NI will be holding ‘nappuccinos’: informal get togethers where mums and dads can come along to hear about the library service, where they can rent out 25 nappies and all required accessories for two weeks at a cost of £20, or a newborn kit for six weeks at a cost of £50, or where they can find out more information about cloth nappies in general and see them in real life.
“There’s no doubt that cloth nappies are becoming increasingly popular with mums and dads today,’ said The Cloth Nappy Library’s, County Down Cloth Champion, Siobhan Grant. ‘When you look at the statistics, moving to cloth nappies really does become a ‘no brainer’. The arrival of the library system means that parents can now benefit from all of the advantages of the cloth nappies AND do it without a large, initial outlay. The library service makes using reusable nappies easy on the purse – and the environment!”
The nappuccinos – which are being backed by local councils and Rethink Waste NI - will be a real family affair so you’re welcome to bring along your other kids! There’ll be toys on hand to keep the kids amused, tea and coffee for parents and a fantastic raffle where the lucky winner will receive a free two-week library rental!
