A total of 5,862 parking tickets (Penalty Charge Notices) have been issued in the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council area in the first six months of this year. That's according to statistics released by the Department for Infrastructure under an FOI request.
The ongoing trajectory seems to be upwards with a total of 7,457 in 2020, 7,934 in 2021 and 10,162 in 2022. Our nearest neighbours Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon had 4,112 tickets issued in the same time period.
In the six month period our Council area had the fourth largest number of tickets issued after Belfast, 35,533, Derry and Strabane, 8,028 and Fermanagh & Omagh, 6,112. Parking tickets are enforced by the Department for Infrastructure who employ Traffic Wardens from NSL Services Group.
Overstaying a time limit whilst using on-street parking is a common way to receive a parking ticket and with Newry being just one of three Controlled Parking Zones throughout the north where charges apply (others being Belfast and Lisburn) this no doubt adds to the figures. There are around 440 on-street parking spaces in Newry!
