A new hotel is planned for Merchants Quay in Newry, representing a significant addition to the accommodation offering in Newry City. Glena Developments propose an 82 bedroom hotel and 45,000 sq ft of offices together with 169 parking spaces on the site of the former CARS of Newry showroom.
Proposals were unveiled today and Newry and Armagh MLA Justin McNulty has welcomed the news of the major development.
Speaking after meeting with Glena Developments who have taken charge of developing the site, one of the most significant developments in living memory Mr McNulty said “I very much welcome the proposals that have been brought forward by Glena Developments. This major regeneration project will make a significant contribution towards the development of Newry City Centre.
“I have been lobbying the Council for quite some time to take steps in order to improve the aesthetic our city centre, which I think we can all agree is in need of attention. This proposed development on Merchant’s Quay will not only enhance Newry’s street appeal, but it will also significantly enhance Newry’s competitive edge as a good place to live, work, and visit.
“I warmly welcome the development plans that have been brought forward for Merchant’s Quay. What we really need to see now is all areas and branches of government functioning fully and working collaboratively to develop and deliver opportunities for Newry’s development.”
The development is one of several major projects ongoing in the Merchants Quay area, an area much neglected in recent years but one that is starting to 'turn the corner' at last.
