Write a commentNewry and Mourne Museum’s new temporary exhibition, ‘Historical Aspects of Business and Commercial Enterprise in Newry and Mourne’ was officially opened yesterday Wednesday by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick.
The exhibition explores the history of the growth of businesses and commercial enterprise in the Newry and Mourne area from the medieval and early modern periods. It includes a range of objects, documents and photographs from the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The exhibition includes artefacts from R.J Sloane’s drapery shop in Kilkeel, Quinn’s of the Milestone and McCann’s bakery in Newry, the Soho Foundry in Newry, Bessbrook Mill, shops in Warrenpoint and Rostrevor and small businesses in the rural area.
Council Chairperson, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick said, “I am especially glad to see that many local people who have shopped or worked in the businesses have greatly contributed to the exhibition.”
Councillor Fitzpatrick continued, “I would like to thank all those who responded to the Museum’s appeal for artefacts, documents and information. Their generosity is much appreciated.”
Major themes include the emergence of Newry as a merchant town in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the development of industry in Newry and the diversity and success of the many small businesses throughout the area. The local impact of the changing national and international social, economic and political climate of the twentieth and early twenty first centuries is also featured in the exhibition.
The exhibition will run until 30 May 2018.
