The entrance to Newry Canal Towpath is closed today 6 April until 5pm as works continue to clear up the canal after an oil polution incident three weeks ago. Newry, Mourne and Down District Council workers have been clearing the part outside WIN Business Park, using a motorised raft for this past week but with the level of contaminated mud and grass in the canal close to Reilly's Lock an excavator has been brought in.
The polution was caused by a quantity of oil entering the Canal and the incident was reported to authorities Wednesday 16 March. Several oil containment booms have been in place since and these have managed to ensure the oil didn't drift further down the Canal . There have been no reports of birds or wildlife being contaminated. Investigations into the source of the contamination are still ongoing.
The Canal Towpath is closed from the entrance at WIN Business Park to where Hickey's Lane joins the towpath but work is expected to be completed by end of day today.
