Newry Cancer Research had a busy year of fundraising in 2016, a year when they reached the milestone of thirty years’ service to the work of Cancer Research UK in Northern Ireland.

At their AGM in Bellinis, Newry last week they presented a cheque for the sum of £67,000 to Adele Harris, Fundraising Manager, Cancer Research UK Northern Ireland.

With 12 committee members the branch has organised many events during the year including: Table Quiz, Big Breakfast, Coffee Mornings, Sponsored Walk, Sporting Events, Golf Classic, Street Collection, Bingo Night and Christmas Card Appeal to name but a few.  The committee have also enjoyed the support of many individuals from across the greater Newry & Mourne area who has taken the time to organise their own fundraising events and contributing to the overall amount raised.

Chairman Gervase McCartan stated: Here we are at the end of another eventful year of fundraising on behalf of Cancer Research UK in Northern Ireland.  The branch would like to sincerely send our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has contributed to our fundraising efforts during 2016.

Chairman Gervase McCartan continued to say that whether it’s you, a family member, or a friend, many of us have been affected by Cancer.  Each year our scientists based at Queen’s University and the Clinical Cancer Centre in Belfast get closer to beating Cancer – developing targeted and kinder treatments; detecting cancers earlier so they’re easier to treat; and finding ways to prevent them in the first place and it’s thanks to people’s generosity that we’re saving more lives every day in Northern Ireland. Mr McCartan took the opportunity to sincerely thank each and every committee member for their volunteering their time and dedication.

Our vision of beating cancer is an enormous challenge, but with amazing people like you we will beat cancer sooner. We need volunteers to join our campaign to raise the profile of our charity work and to host events to help us continue to raise £50K during 2017.

The Committee will be hosting a ‘World Cancer Day Spinathon’ which will take place on Saturday 4th February at Tesco Extra Store on the Belfast Road from 8:00am – 8:00pm. There will be 5 bikes pedalling for 12 hours and you can book your spinning session for a minimum £10 donation.  Spin for as long as you like and donate as much as you can.  This fundraiser is open to all members of the general public aged 16+ years. Mr McCartan stated that we need individuals to sign up so please get involved

Adele Harris, Fundraising Manager said that without the amazing fundraising efforts of the Newry local committee and the generous donations from the local community we would not be able to continue with our life saving research work.
