Gervase McCartan, Newry Cancer Research Committee stated that 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives. With everyone’s support Cancer Research UK has helped double survival rates in the last 40 years. There are 200 cancer types and collectively together we need to work harder than ever to raise vital funds to help our local scientists to find a cure and beat cancer sooner to help the people of Northern Ireland.
We are hosting a ‘World Cancer Day Spinathon’ which will take place on Saturday 4th February at Tesco Extra Store on the Belfast Road, Newry from 8:00am – 8:00pm. There will be 5 bikes pedalling for 12 hours and you can book your spinning session for a minimum £10 donation. Spin for as long as you like and donate as much as you can. This fundraiser is open to all members of the general public aged 16+ years. Darren Mullen 1st Team Manager, Newry City AFC stated that he is delighted to pledge his support for World Cancer Day.
Coming together to remember those we’ve lost to cancer is very close to my heart with the recent bereavement of my Father Raymond who suffered from cancer in his later years. I also lost my Mother in law Alice Poland to cancer so I appreciate the stress and suffering involved with those affected by this disease. My family and fellow team mates at Newry City AFC want to remember fondly those we’ve lost to cancer celebrate those who are still here and be a part of a generation that transforms the lives of people across Northern Ireland affected by cancer. We are looking forward to showing our support on Saturday 4th February.
Mark Haughey - Central Defender - Linfield Football Club is also putting his support behind the day stating that he too is delighted to be supporting Newry Cancer Research on World Cancer Day.
It’s a new-year and a new challenge for the committee to raise vital funds to support the work of 30 scientists based at our world leading Cancer Research & Cell Biology Centre at Queens University Belfast. It’s important that everyone gets involved and show their support as everyone knows someone that has been affected by this cruel disease. There are loads of local sports clubs in the area so get signed up today. You can also wear your Unity Band with pride which can be purchased from any member of Newry Cancer Research or the local Cancer Research Charity Shop on Hill Street, Newry.
