Write a commentA window has been vandalised once again at the First Presbyterian Church (Non Subscribing) in John Mitchell Place in Newry. A window at the church was broken and had to be replaced during a similar incident in April 2018. It's only in recent weeks that the damage in 2018 was repaired.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed anything last night in the vicinity of the church.
Sergeant McDonald said: “Sometime overnight (Wednesday 27th March and Thursday 28th March), it was reported that a window of a church was damaged.
“Enquiries are continuing and at this stage, the incident is being treated as a hate crime.
“We would appeal to anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 408 28/3/19. Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”
Newry, Mourne and Down, Councillor David Taylor said "The attack and damage caused to First Presbyterian Church (Non Subscribing) Newry is a despicable and evil act.
"It is difficult to comprehend the mindset of someone who would desecrate any place of worship. Extremely angry that this has happened particularly given the fact that this window was only repaired a short number of weeks ago following previous damage caused to it."
Newry and Armagh MP, Mickey Brady also spoke of his revulsion at the incident. "I am appalled to learn of this attack on a stain glass window at the First Presbyterian Church.
It is a despicable act of vandalism and hate. It has deeply angered and offended the entire community.
"I appeal to all to stand up against these criminals, assist the police in their inquiries and ensure those behind this hate outrage are brought to justice”.
