Write a commentAn incident which saw a window damaged at the First Presbyterian Church (Non Subscribing) in Newry has been condemned by local Councillor David Taylor.
Shortly after 10pm last night, 17 April, police received a report of criminal damage at the church in the John Mitchel Place area of Newry.
Commenting on the incident Ulster Unionist Councillor David Taylor said “I am extremely angry that an attack has occurred on the building of First Presbyterian Church Non Subscribing Newry. I condemn the actions of the individuals who perpetrated this heinous act in the strongest possible terms.
“The damage caused to the Church building runs into many thousands of pounds and there is no doubt having spoken to members of First Presbyterian Church Non Subscribing Newry that this incident has caused deep distress to their congregation.
“I can only describe this incident as a hate crime and it is extremely unfortunate that there are still those in the local community who are unwilling to display respect and tolerance towards members of the Protestant faith in Newry.
“First Presbyterian Church Non Subscribing Newry are an extremely active congregation who offer a very positive contribution to the local community including through their involvement in important charity work. It is terribly disappointing to say the very least that they should be on the receiving end of such unacceptable behaviour.
“I would call upon the local community to rally around the congregation of First Presbyterian Church Non Subscribing Newry and to offer their full support to members of the Church.
“I would also appeal to anyone with information in respect of the incident to report it to the Police immediately.”
A 35 year-old man was arrested at the scene. He was subsequently charged with criminal damage and was due to appear at Newry Magistrates Court this morning.
