Write a commentWork is progressing steadily on Phase One of Newry's new greenway that's hoped will eventually link up with the Omeath to Carlingford greenway. Phase One will take the path from the Albert Basin to the weir on the Omeath Road and it's hoped that work on Phase Two to Victoria Lock will happen soon after.
The Newry to Carlingford greenway will surely be one of the most scenic walks on the entire island, looking out over Carlingford Lough with the Mourne Mountains on one side and Slieve Foye and the Cooley Mountains on the other.
It follows the granting of planning permission earlier this year to upgrade and improve the existing pathway, improving access along greenway with new pedestrian crossings at the existing weir and at Victoria Lock gates.
Authorities in Louth are also planning to expand the greenway to Dundalk and Blackrock making it entirely possible to cycle the network all the way from Dundalk to Portadown via the Newry Canal Towpath and on to Lough Neagh.
Concrete pillars are being put in place at the weir at present between Newry Canal and the Clanrye River to form a bridge across.
The path will run on the narrow bank between the river and the canal with timber fencing on either side in places. Itwill be between 1.5 and 4 metres wide. The path will cross the top of the lock gates at Victoria Lock with a new gantry being put in place.
