Newry City Councillor Aidan Mathers has praised author James McVeigh for his powerful and moving book Our Martin and thanked everyone who attended the hugely successful Newry launch at Derrybeg Community Centre.
The event brought together local residents, party members and friends of Martin McGuinness for an evening of reflection and remembrance, celebrating his life, leadership and enduring legacy.
Cllr Mathers said: "Our Martin is a truly powerful and heartfelt tribute to Martin McGuinness — a man who dedicated his life to peace, equality, and Irish unity. James McVeigh has done a remarkable job in capturing Martin's humanity, courage, and deep commitment to building a better future for all. The stories and photographs in this book remind us of the man behind the public figure — compassionate, determined, and rooted in his community."
The councillor also expressed his gratitude to everyone who helped make the evening so special, saying: "I want to sincerely thank everyone who came along and made the night what it was — a warm, uplifting, and community-focused celebration of Martin's life and legacy."
Cllr Mathers added: "I would also like to thank Liz Kimmins MLA and our friend and comrade Sean Hughes for their powerful words on the night, which added so much to the discussion and reflection. The respect, pride, and affection felt for Martin were evident throughout the evening."
He concluded: "Sinn Féin will continue progressing Martin McGuinness's legacy — working every day to build a united, peaceful, and just Ireland where everyone has a place and a voice."
