Newry, Mourne and Down Youth Council seeking new members

Newry, Mourne and Down Youth Council are seeking new members to apply for a Youth Councillor role for the district.

The Youth Council are a district wide consultative group under the Northern Ireland structure of Youth Voice which gives young people the opportunity to engage with decision makers and have a say on local issues. This group has been set up in partnership with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and the group work very closely with the District Council as the representative voice of young people for this district.

The Youth Council was established to create a meaningful voice for young people in this district of Newry, Mourne and Down and seeks to have membership of 15 to 18 year olds that are proportionally representative of all sectors of the community.

Not only does the Youth Council enjoy close links and a strong working relationship with the Council but also neighbouring Youth Councils both North and South of Ireland. The Youth Council runs the annual YAFTAs event, (Youth and Future Talent Awards), that recognises and rewards outstanding community actions by young people in this area.

They also represent the views of young people locally to politicians both locally and regionally. They campaign on issues of importance to youth, organise consultations, organise events for other young people and have the opportunity to get involved in many other youth opportunities both locally and across Ireland and the UK.

The Youth Council therefore represents an outstanding opportunity for personal and social development, for the development of a wide range of skills and knowledge, a practical involvement in community and social action not to mention a great way to meet people and make a wider range of friends.

For many it will be a valuable experience both personally and as a striking contribution to their CV or UCAS.
