Newry Museum has organised a programme of events for all ages to mark European Heritage Open Days 2026. The events taking place over the weekend of 12 and 13 September, are inspired by the theme Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine.
The programme draws on design and traditions connected to the museum's latest exhibition, Categorically Celtic - Traditional Design in Irish Art, Politics and Popular Culture, which explores the significance of Celtic art in Irish life.
On Saturday 12 September, a Museum Tour will run from 2 to 3pm, giving visitors full access to the temporary exhibitions Categorically Celtic and Making Waves. Earlier that day, from 11am to 12:30pm, children aged 5 to 11 can take part in Spark the Imagination: Illuminated Letters Workshop. The session includes a guided tour of the exhibition followed by a hands-on creative activity in which children will reimagine ancient Celtic symbols to design their own artwork. Spaces are limited and advance booking is essential.
Saturday afternoon also brings Tales of Wonder: Myths and Music with Sinéad McAleavey, running from 2:30 to 4pm. The acclaimed artist will bring ancient legends to life through storytelling and music inspired by Ireland's past.
On Sunday 13 September, those who missed Saturday's tour will have another opportunity to walk through the museum's galleries and the Categorically Celtic and Making Waves exhibitions, with a tour running from 1 to 2pm. From 2:30pm to 4pm, award winning artist and instructor Orla Barry from Dundalk will lead Master the Craft: Celtic Knotwork Painting, a watercolour workshop for those aged 16 and over. Participants will learn techniques for intricate Celtic knotwork and paint their own piece to take home. Spaces are limited and advance booking is essential.
