Drain and pipe clearing works are currently being carried out by NI Water in the Meadow area of Newry to reduce the risk of flooding. Newry City Councillor Aidan Mathers has welcomed the move which follows a site meeting he called earlier this year.
Cllr Mathers said he had called the meeting with NI Water, Department for Infrastructure officials, Minister Liz Kimmins MLA and Dáire Hughes MP to discuss recent and ongoing flooding in the area. During periods of heavy rainfall, residents have experienced toilets backing up, flooding of local green areas and, in some cases, raw sewage flowing from drains. These incidents have caused significant frustration and concern for the community, with added fear of repeat flooding as the weather worsens, along with damage to some properties.
At the meeting, NI Water committed to a programme of clearing and de-silting pipes and drains throughout the area to improve drainage and reduce flooding, and that work is now underway. Officials advised that where inspections identify pipes requiring replacement or upgrades, the necessary works will be carried out.
Cllr Mathers said the situation had required a solution for local residents, and that the council would continue to monitor progress closely. "We will continue to monitor progress closely and press for long-term solutions to ensure residents no longer have to deal with these unacceptable conditions. I'd like to commend the Minister and her officials for their prompt action on this issue."
