Newry People's Forum are hosting a Save Our City public meeting at 7.30pm on Thursday 8 October at the Canal Court and are urging the public to attend.
The meeting will provide an important opportunity for the people of Newry to come together, raise concerns about the future of the city and, most importantly, begin developing practical solutions.
The recently established Newry People’s Forum is a non-political platform established to provide a voice for the people of Newry and to encourage constructive dialogue between the business community, residents, community and voluntary organisations and the various bodies responsible for the city’s future.
The Forum Committee represent a broad selection of Newry life and includes: Canon Francis Brown, Brian Cleland, Danny Hughes, Martin Hughes, Ross McArdle, Angela McCann, Grainne Powell and Barry Reilly.
Brian Cleland, Chairman, Newry People's Forum said: "People are contacting us every week and raising concerns about the condition of our streets, vacant premises, investment, communication and the lack of meaningful consultation on issues that affect the city. These concerns cannot simply be ignored.
"We need a genuine partnership involving business, community, voluntary organisations, residents, Council, political representatives and the relevant government departments. We also need a dedicated strategy for Newry that deals with immediate short-term priorities while establishing a clear long-term vision for the city.
"Our message is simple - Come along on 8 October, bring your ideas, bring your concerns and be part of the discussion about the future of Newry.”
The event on the night will include discussions around matters concerning the betterment of our city including canal and river regeneration, night-time economy, Hill Street regeneration, park and town safety, Greenway and cross border co-operation, tourism promotion, a Bloom/ festival event and sporting facilities and community capital projects.
