Well known SRC lecturer Kieran Swail is preparing for the ultimate cycling test tomorrow 13 September - an 'Everesting' challenge that will see him climb the equivalent height of the world's tallest mountain.
Joined by training partner James McKernan, Swail will attempt to cycle 8,848 metres of vertical elevation to match the height of Mount Everest. The gruelling challenge aims to raise vital funds for two local charities: Newry-based suicide prevention and support organisation PIPS Hope and Support and Little Heros, an independent charity supporting sick children at the Royal Victoria Hospital for Sick Children by providing the paediatric team with life-saving tools and resources.
The Challenge
The cyclists will tackle the CarnCastle Hill Climb near Ballygally repeatedly - a demanding 4.7km route with an average gradient of 6.1% that they must complete thirty-one times. The non-stop challenge is expected to take approximately 26 hours, with the pair cycling continuously through day and night.
To maintain momentum during the marathon effort, various cycling groups will join Kieran and James for portions of the challenge. Local cyclists are also encouraged to participate for several laps to show their support.
After months of dedicated preparation, the duo began their final tapering phase at the beginning of September, fine-tuning their fitness for the main event.
A former resident of Warrenpoint, Kieran maintains strong ties to the Newry area through his dual role at Southern Regional College. He serves as a part-time lecturer specialising in travel and tourism while also working as a Business Support Innovation Technology Specialist within the College's Business Support & Innovation unit, where he provides expert guidance to local tourism enterprises seeking business improvements.
Speaking about the upcoming fundraiser, Kieran said: "Both PIPS Hope and Support and Little Heros are charities close to my heart, and I'm delighted to able to fundraise for both charities. It will be hard cycling throughout the night, but nothing compares to the valiant efforts the charities put into supporting and encouraging individuals and families on a daily basis. Any support in terms of donations or support on the day would be appreciated".

Supporters wishing to cheer on the cyclists in person can visit CarnCastle Hill between 8am Saturday 13 September and 12 noon Sunday 14 September. Parking and facilities are available at the Ballygalley Car Park and Community Hall.
