It seems that Newry Swimming Pool could potentially be closed for around 4-5 weeks in order to carry out work at the facility. Several sources have indicated this time frame and a photograph we have been given access to show the floor of the pool raised in a fixed position. The Health Suite remains open.
It follows a sudden announcement on Sunday at noon on the NMDBeActiveLeisure Facebook that the pool would be closed "until further notice" due to "maintenance issues" To date Council have not informed the public that the facility is closed, via the usual media press release route.
Whether repair work that was scheduled as far back as 2022 will also be carried out when the pool is closed is unknown.
Earlier today Newry.ie asked Newry, Mourne and Down District Council if they could give us details of what the maintenance issues were and an indication of how long it is likely that the pool would be closed for. We also asked if there would be any compensation proposed for Leisure Centre members who have paid for access to the facility. To date a reply hasn't been received.
