A Newry teacher is calling on schools to take the lead in shaping how artificial intelligence (AI) is used in classrooms—placing values, ethics, and compassion at the heart of this digital transformation.
Shane McComb, Digital Learning Leader at Sacred Heart Grammar School, Newry and Managing Director of NI Schools Hub Ltd, has published 'Guiding AI with Grace: Transforming Education Through Ethical AI Integration'. The book presents a timely and values-driven roadmap for schools navigating the rapidly evolving world of AI.
“AI is already shaping how children learn, communicate, and interact,” said McComb. “But we must ask ourselves: are we allowing technology to serve our educational values—or are we letting it redefine them?”
Drawing on his experience teaching in England and here, McComb explores the challenges AI poses to human dignity, relational teaching, and spiritual development. He argues that as schools adopt AI tools, they must do so in a way that preserves compassion, community, and the irreplaceable human connection between teacher and student.
“As a father to two young boys under six, and as a teacher, I wrote this book with my children and students firmly in mind. AI will undoubtedly shape the world they grow up in, but it must never redefine what it means to be human. AI cannot love, it cannot grieve, and it cannot care. But teachers can. Parents can. And it’s our fundamental responsibility to ensure our children are shaped by wisdom and empathy, not just by algorithms.”
The book offers case studies, reflective prompts, and strategic advice for school leaders, teachers, and pastoral teams aiming to integrate AI responsibly and effectively.
McComb is joined by a group of contributors, including Jake Magill, Patrick Hickey, Joanne McGovern, Michael Fegan, Philip Alcock and Alistair Hamill. Most of the contributors are local practising teachers and school leaders, making Guiding AI with Grace a uniquely local and relevant resource. Their insights ensure the book remains grounded in the real challenges and opportunities faced by schools today.
McComb hopes the book inspires many conversations about how we use AI.
“This is a book for every educational institution that wants to lead AI with purpose, integrity and, above all, grace,” he said.
