Warrenpoint Community Association launched an independent survey this week marking the beginning of a community-led initiative to determine the future of this cherished local landmark.
A Piece of Local History
Warrenpoint Baths has been an integral part of the town's seafront for generations, serving as a beloved recreational facility where countless local families learned to swim and enjoyed the unique experience of saltwater bathing. The facility holds deep historical significance for the community and represents an important part of Warrenpoint's maritime heritage.
For many years, the baths provided a safe and accessible swimming environment for residents of all ages, fostering community spirit and promoting health and wellbeing amongst locals whilst also attracting visitors to the area.
Community Vision for Restoration
Warrenpoint Community Association's vision centres on restoring the baths primarily for the benefit and health of local residents, whilst also creating a facility that can be enjoyed by tourists visiting the area. The community group believes that a restored Warrenpoint Baths could once again serve as a focal point for promoting physical activity, community engagement, and local pride.
With the planned construction of the Narrow Water Bridge, which will link Warrenpoint and Omeath, the restored baths could serve residents on both sides of the border. This cross-border accessibility would enhance the facility's role as a shared community resource, strengthening ties between neighbouring communities and creating opportunities for increased usage and support.
"We're at the very beginning of this process," explained a spokesperson for Warrenpoint Community Association. "There's considerable work ahead, but we believe it's essential to first understand what our community genuinely wants for this important facility. The upcoming Narrow Water Bridge makes this even more significant, as we could be creating a facility that serves both Warrenpoint and Omeath residents."
Current Situation
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has outlined proposals to convert the baths into a café, seaweed baths/spa, external venue space community function room. However, there has been significant interest expressed within the community for restoring the facility to its original purpose as a saltwater swimming pool.
Public Consultation
The independent survey aims to gather transparent feedback from residents across South Down and North Louth about their preferences for the baths' future. The community association is committed to representing what local people actually want and need.
"This is an opportunity for everyone to have their say on an important community asset," the spokesperson continued. "We want to hear from as many people as possible – residents, former users of the baths, and anyone who cares about Warrenpoint's future."

Next Steps
Results from the survey will be presented to elected representatives from political parties at a meeting scheduled for Thursday 19th June 2025. The public will be updated on the findings at the same time.
