Write a commentThis Saturday 26th of April at 11am another part of Newry History will be celebrated when Newry’s latest sculpture is unveiled. The Newry Docker is already in place albeit covered up, on the Albert Basin in front of Debenhams at The Quays.
The permanent sculpture represents the contribution made on Newry Canal by Dockers and their families. It is a project jointly funded by Newry and Mourne District Council and the Northern Ireland Executive through the Department of Social Development Neighbourhood Renewal Programme.
The artwork will compliment the ongoing Public Realm Scheme on Newry Canalfrom the Canal Street area down to Dublin bridge. It will also recognise and symbolise the history and special character of the Newry docks and the legacy it holds therein.
The actual location is the walkway on the Quayside at Albert basin adjacent to the Quays shopping centre in close proximity to the Dublin Bridge in Newry. It is a popular area that sees visitors and shoppers use this as a link to the shopping complex and will create a striking impression for visitors and locals alike.
A book outlining the history of and stories from dock workers families will also be launched on the day.
