A divert that was in place at Daisy Hill Hospital for patients who needed acute stroke care/ treatment has stopped and normal services have resumed from the Hospital.
From February patients who needed specialist acute treatment were transferred by ambulance to Craigavon Hospital or the Royal Victoria Hospital before being transferred back to Newry for ongoing care. The Southern Trust explained at the time that this was due to "insufficient staff coverage". The stroke unit at Daisy Hill hospital remained open at the time for admission of "other suitable stroke patients."
The divert was only supposed to last a fortnight but was then expanded to the end of March as the temporary Consultant they had appointed to help them resume the service wasn't initially able to take up their post. "As they unfortunately were not able to take up post as initially anticipated, the divert has been extended to the end of March when the new doctor plans to join the Daisy Hill stroke team." a Southern Trust spokesperson said.
Newry.ie asked the Trust this week if the new doctor had now joined the Daisy Hill Stroke team but it wasn't mentioned in their reply. A spokesperson said “the ambulance divert for acute stroke treatment is no longer in place and normal services have resumed from DHH".
