A local Councillor has said that the proposed redevelopment of Newtownhamilton Police Station must see the return of land to the community.
Slieve Gullion Councillor Barra Ó Muirí said “As part of the South Armagh Police review it was agreed that there would be a redevelopment of Newtownhamilton police station to make it fit for purpose for modern, community led policing.
“As part of this redevelopment we want to see the size of the current site and the fortifications around it scaled back to free up more space in Newtownhamilton.
“The scaling back of the Barracks would allow for the return of two way traffic on Newry Street to help alleviate traffic congestion in the town.
“This would also allow us to look at adding key community facilities to Newtownhamilton to help regenerate the town.
“The Sinn Féin team will continue to work with all agencies to ensure that South Armagh has a modern and fit for purpose police service for all our communities.
“It is important that the South Armagh Police Review is fully implemented to allow for the community to have confidence in a new, community led approach to policing.
