An oil containment boom has been placed on Newry Canal folowing a pollution incident yesterday along Canal Quay in the city. It appears that fuel has entered the canal, with the area between Lock 2 and WIN Industrial Estate affected. The Northern Ireland Environment Agency has been contacted. A slick of some sort can be clearly seen in the water with surrounding plants coloured black.

When Newry.ie visited the scene earlier, this morning just two ducks were in the vicinity although it was unclear if they had been affected by the pollution. Swans and Herons are regularly seen in the area.
A Newry, Mourne and Down Council spokesperson said "On Wednesday 15 March, it became clear that oil or fuel had entered Newry Canal and was appearing along Canal Quay. Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has reported the matter to NIEA, which is currently investigating the matter."
The council spokesperson explained that the oil boom has been put in place to limit the spread of the pollution while a plan is agreed on further actions to be taken.
