Fancy a wee trip to Portadown on the Train and a fun cycle back to Newry along the towpath?
In anticipation of this year’s Bike Week the Northern Ireland Cycle Initiative (NICI) is inviting families to dust off their bikes, pump up their tyres and head out for a day of fun in the sun.
NICI will host an all-ages bike ride on Sunday 15 May taking cycle enthusiasts from Portadown to Newry with an ever so chic stop at Scarva Tea Rooms in Craigavon before lunch a Cafe Olive in Newry city centre.
Tom McClelland, NICI representative said, “We are really excited about this year’s bike ride and keen to show the world just how chic cycling can be. We will be awarding prizes to the best dressed male cyclist and most glamorous female cyclist as well as the best rescued, most recycled bike. We are inviting everyone with a set of road worthy wheels to join in on this very leisurely, easy paced, fun ride from Portadown to Newry that’s mainly on almost traffic free roads.”
NICI is a pioneering voluntary organisation campaigning to improve cycling safety and promote cycling as a realistic safe healthy and economic form of transport. It plays a key role in the ongoing debate of environmental issues across Northern Ireland and is instrumental in communicating to Ministers, MLAs and policy makers the huge health, environmental and economic benefits that more cycling will bring.
The bike ride on 15 May is free and will ride off at 10.30am at Portadown train station. Prizes will be awarded on arrival at Newry then participants are invited to get the train back from Newry or cycle back to get full proper certificate.
