Improvement work is expected to commence shortly at the entrance to the Albert Basin where the Newry stretch of the Carlingford Lough Greenway begins.

It's one of the first visible results from the Albert Basin Task and Finish Group who are charged with turning the Albert Basin site in Newry into a 15 acre public park.

The group have agreed to spending £8,350 on the works which are expected to make the entrance much more inviting to visitors and residents alike.

The sum was approved at the October SP&R Committee meeting and ratified at this week's Newry, Mourne and Down Council monthly meeting.

The existing steel gates topped with barbed wire fencing and razor wire are more akin to a prison complex than to the entrance point of one of the jewels in Newry's crown! The stunningly scenic greenway which travels to Victoria Lock between Newry Canal and the Clanrye River will eventually go all the way to Carlingford and beyond.
