Write a commentA period fashion show, film screening and conference took place at Newry Museum last weekend as part of International Women’s Day!
The conference examined the role of Irish women and children in the First World War. The speakers and topics included Hugh McShane on “Irish Women: From Home Rule to the Easter Rising”, Dr Margaret Ward on Suffrage, Brett Irwin on Lady Londonderry in the Great War and Dr Robert Whan on Newry and Mourne women and children in the Great War.
After lunch, a period fashion show was held with the items on show dating from 1850 to 1920. Entitled “A Glimpse into the Past”, the fashion show presented a “living museum” to the audience where local characters were brought to life through clothes from the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
On Sunday there was a film and talk on Nurse Edith Cavell and Newry lady, Ada Bodart (née Doherty), who were both involved in smuggling Allied soldiers out of German-occupied Belgium during the First World War.
